Meet the Team

Highly Trained Veterinarians

Dr. Nicole Canavan

Dr. Canavan is the owner and primary veterinarian at Coastal Paws Veterinary Hospital (formerly Care Animal Hospital of Seminole). She graduated cum laude from St. George's University School of Veterinary Medicine after completing her fourth-year clinical rotations at The University of Tennessee. Afterwards, went on to complete a one-year rotating internship in medicine, surgery, and emergency care at Nashville Veterinary Specialists in 2013. She relocated from metro Atlanta to the sunny beaches of St. Petersburg in 2017. After working general practice and relief work, Dr. Canavan embarked on a new journey of practice ownership, purchasing Care Animal Hospital of Seminole in 2022. She is excited to offer compassionate, expert veterinary care to all her patients. Dr. Canavan takes extra care in client communication, and has a special interest in Dentistry, Dermatology, Wellness Care and Internal Medicine. She is truly honored to be a family veterinarian for her patients.

Dr. Michael Buckner

Dr. Mike Buckner is our surgical and relief veterinarian. He was born and raised in South Florida. He received his Bachelor of Science and Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine (1993) from the University of Tennessee. Dr. Buckner returned to South Florida to intern at Hollywood Animal Hospital, where he served an additional year as an associate and assistant director of interns. He moved to Pinellas County, the home of his bride of 28 years, where he has resided since 1995. He currently lives in Clearwater with his wife, 5 children, a dog named Daisy and two Guinea Pigs, Chai and Patches. Dr. Buckner gained strong proficiency in surgery, internal medicine and diagnostic imaging. He performs surgeries for Coastal Paws and fills in seeing patients when needed.

Charlie, Veterinary Technician

Charlie, Technician

Charlcy (also called Charlie) is a part of our technician and management team. She has been a technician since 2011 and started with Dr. Canavan in 2022. Charlie enjoys teaching our clients about the best medicine for their animals, helping with surgery and managing aspects of our clinic so it can reach its fullest potential. Charlie has had almost every job one can have working with companion animals; such as pet sitting, farm jobs, grooming, and dog training. She loves all things animals which is apparent with all her furry, feathered and scaley kids. Currently, she owns 7 dogs, 2 cats, 3 ferrets, 2 chickens, some fish and an axolotl. When not working with us, she is either home taking care of what she lovingly calls “her funny farm” or is out on adventures with the dogs and her spouse.

Laurie, Office Manager

Laurie, Office Manager

Laurie is the office manager at our wonderful animal clinic. She was born and raised in a little town outside of Akron Ohio and graduated from Bowling Green State University with a BA in social work. Her profession moved her to Florida back in 1981. She started in the veterinary field over 15 years ago and continues to enjoy it. During her years here, she has been blessed to adopt two precious pups in need of a safe and happy home. She currently has a 10lb chihuahua mix named Tuffy who went from being a scared and abused little dog into a playful and loving companion. She also has a granddog named Simba who lives with her and is Tuffy's best friend. When Laurie is not working, she spends every moment she can with her 8 beautiful grandchildren who call her Gigi.
